Newly released CostMine data shows a continuing dramatic increase in mining equipment operating costs. The graphs below, constructed from current and historical data published in CostMine’s Mine & Mill Equipment Costs, An Estimator’s Guide, demonstrate a striking upswing in costs beginning in 2004, attributable primarily to global increases in the costs of energy and tires. Record-breaking commodity prices of late have reduced the economic impact of these high costs on producers, but if commodity prices come down and high operating costs linger, profit margins will certainly suffer.
