Here's a brand new paper by Juliana Parreira, a mining engineering PhD student at the University of British Columbia, Canada. She and her co-authors explain how automation and key performance indicators contribute to sustainable mining.

Here is part of the paper’s abstract:

The application of automated systems can make an important contribution towards increasing the efficiency and sustainability of large and small mining operations. Automation can improve the quality of work for employees by reducing exposure to unhealthy or unsafe environments, and its introduction into mining operations provides opportunities for training and capacity-building.

The paper also talks about the advantages of autonomous haul trucks and other automated systems at the mine site.
