Australian mineral production well–positioned to respond to an emergent global recovery

The Australian mining industry has not been severely affected by the global economic meltdown and has, in fact, increased its production volume from 948 million tons in 2008 to 1,015 million tons in 2009. The production value of the industry has grown from US$35 billion in 2004 to US$78.2 billion in 2009 at a CAGR of 17.4%. The industry has been able to sustain this positive growth through focus on the fundamentals of strong balance sheets, quality assets and competitive pricing structures.

The country has major investment planned in the construction and infrastructure sectors which will drive the domestic demand for minerals. With respect to the export market, the Chinese–led economic recovery of emerging markets in Asia will be favorable for the mineral sector in the country. Overall production is expected to increase from 1,015 million tons in 2009 to 1,197 million tons in 2015.
