China Pushes for Coal Gasification

China has launched a multi-billion dollar effort to turn some of its massive coal resources into gas. China now has more than 10 coal-gasification plants under construction with total nameplate capacity of about 1.2 trillion cubic feet per year. If all these coal-gasification projects become reality their output would amount to about half of China’s current natural gas consumption of just over 2.5 Tcf per year. And the effort is coming at a huge expense. Each plant costs at least $1.5 billion. read more »

The numbers alone are staggering. Antarctica’s Gamburtsev mountains are 2500 metres above sea level. They’re also under hundreds of metres of ice at their shallowest points. Discovered by a Soviet team in the 50s, they’ve now been mapped.  read more »

It is amazing to think that so much of it starts in the Nevada desert with a mine moving over 7,000 tons of ore, and after we have done our bit, that 7,000 tons ends up producing one 400 oz (12.5 kilos) London Good Delivery gold bar! Tomorrow will be another day, and it will be a very different one, but for now, we can go to the golf course! read more »
