Massey Energy (NYSE: MEE) today accepted three Sentinels of Safety Awards in Washington, DC. The annual Sentinels of Safety award program recognizes achievement of outstanding safety records in America's mineral extractive industries. The Sentinels of Safety awards program is co-sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Massey is the first mining company ever to receive three of the mining industry's most prestigious safety awards in one year. read more »
Impala Platinum chairman ousted for 'speaking his mind'

Fred Roux, one of South Africa's more prominent mining men, was sacked as chairman of Impala Platinum by its board of directors at a meeting yesterday, ahead of Thursday's annual general meeting. Roux - who holds degrees in science, an MBA and a PhD - released a statement on the matter, and attached an e-mail sent to him this past Sunday by Niall Carroll, apparently in his role as CEO of Royal Bafokeng Holdings, which earns untold millions a year in the form of royalties from Impala, and separately ranks as the biggest shareholder in Impala. read more »
Conservation and Native American Groups Challenge Bush-Era Mining Giveaways

A coalition of conservation and Native American organizations today filed a lawsuit in federal district court in Washington, D.C. challenging two regulations issued by the Bush Administration that weakened the requirements for environmental and taxpayer protections on federal public land involved in mining operations. read more »
