Summary

This review surveys online resources relevant to mine backfills. It lists courses, symposia, theses, presentations and publications on backfills. It summarizes the technical approaches to designing and placing backfill in underground mines in order to provide roof support, safety, and to limit surface subsidence that could result in adverse environmental impact and disruption of surface water hydrology.

INTRODUCTION

Backfill is the material used to fill voids created by mining excavations. Thus does MiningWatch Canada define the term. Wikipedia seems not to have an article—offering an opportunity for the innovative.

In this review I do not compete with the best out there; all I try to do is augment and bring up to date. For example, the best source of up-to-date information on backfilling with tailings is Tailings.info. and I recommend you take a look.

I am sure I neither list nor survey all that is new, so if you feel left out, let me know.
